most common car maintenance questions answered

  1. Can you briefly introduce yourself, including your name and what you do?
Anne Russomano, Nutley Kia Owner – most of my time is spent greeting customers, managing our Service and Body Department and I work closely with John Jurena who is our Parts Manager.
  2. Why is it important to have regular car maintenance?
Because of the investment you have made in your vehicle. The only possible no benefit to not maintaining your vehicle is to save money but in end  it will be much more costly to you.. A poorly maintained vehicle will likely lead to more expensive repairs rather than routine maintenance. It is easy  to identify a vehicle that has not been properly maintained and it will have a negative impact at the time of resale or trade-in.  Make certain you perform your maintain and service with a trusted Dealership.
  3. What are the most common maintenance items you recommend?
Oil and filter changes, tire rotations, battery checks, and vehicle inspections.
  4. What are the most frequent maintenance mistakes you’ve seen?
The use of inadequate labor and/or parts. Also, waiting too long between maintenance visits.
  5. My check engine light keeps showing on, but everything seems normal. Is it just a false alarm? Should I do something about it?
A check engine light is never a false alarm, but not always a crisis. Do not wait to have it looked at by a trusted mechanic.
  6. How often should I change my vehicle’s oil?
Be familiar with the Manufacturer’s recommendation listed in your Owner’s Manual. Keep in mind the Northeast is considered a severe condition area because of the extreme weather, traffic and road conditions As a result more frequent changes are recommend. There are still some consumers who believe in 3000 mile interval and many manufacturers recommend 7500 mile intervals. I find that tire rotations are as important as oil changes to help extend the life of your tires and I recommend that both are done at 6000 mile intervals or at minimum 2 times per year if you drive low miles.
  7. How long do bulbs typically last?
There is not a common timeframe but it depends on the type of bulb. Halogen bulbs have a longer life but are typically more expensive to repair or replace. Filament bulbs need to be change more frequently but are typically not as expensive.
  8. How do I know when to replace tires?
Tread depth and abnormal wear typically determines the need to replace and should be measured at each oil change. Of course, tire damage from curb and road hazards may require an unscheduled replacement.
  9. What are the signs before brake problems?
A shutter or vibration when depressing brakes are clear signs of a problem. If you feel that your vehicle is not responding properly or if it is taking longer to slow down have the entire system checked. With regular maintain brake inspections should be performed.
  10. When is it time for a new battery?
This can vary based upon usage and driving habits. The life of the battery will also depend on the type of battery installed. Most new vehicle manufacturers guarantee the battery for 24 months. A battery life charging check should also be made  during your regular maintenance visits.
