halloween car decorating

You’ve heard about decorating a car for Christmas, but have you ever thought of decorating it for Halloween? It can be a really fun endeavor for the whole family to work on. Not only can you decorate your house but go over the top and decorate your car as well!

Here are a few ideas on how to deck out your car for the upcoming Halloween day.

Know where to go

Decorating your car for Halloween is easier than you think. There are lots of places you can go to get some special effects for your project. You can get so many Halloween decorations from Amazon, but other good ideas are the Dollar Store and Party City. These places are great for Halloween props. Many Halloween stores sell specific car accessories. You can find anything from eyelashes for your headlights, bat wings and even shark fins for the top of your car.

You can either use these or make your own, for a fun DIY project. DIY projects are great to get the kids involved and it helps save money. You can use any household item for your decorations, like construction paper, cardboard or styrofoam. Some options are

  • Cutting out scary teeth from white styrofoam or cardboard
  • Use colored tissue paper to make bouquets
  • Use hay, leaves or rocks for your decorations if your theme is outdoorsy.

Know your theme

On the topic of themes, to get the best experience out of decorating your vehicle, make sure you know what you want to do. Don’t be scared to get creative, pick a theme that speaks to you. Are you going scary, cute, funny? Make sure you get the right decorations for the job, depending on what your theme is. And if you’re doing some decorating on your house, make sure your car matches!

You could go anywhere from decorating your car like a bat mobile or go the spooky way with spiderwebs, graveyards or even a pirate ship. If you’re going the cute route, get some inspiration from Disney movies or your favorite movie characters. The possibilities are endless!

Make sure your decorations are safe for driving.

Depending on what you plan to do with your car, your decorations may be very different. If you want to drive with your decked-out car, though, make sure to choose decorations that won’t be safety hazards. They shouldn’t obstruct your view or that of other drivers. They should also be well secured and shouldn’t block your mirrors or windows.

Get to work

The next step is to start bringing your idea to life. Once you have your theme and your decoration, get to work on putting it together. Here are some ideas of how you can do that

spiderweb carHow about having a fake limb hanging out of your trunk? You can buy the fake limbs from your local Halloween store or online and buy some fake blood. To secure the limb, close part of it in your trunk and leave the rest sticking out for everyone to see. It’ll be sure to make people do a double-take.

How about having a graveyard in your trunk? This is a great idea for a tailgating Halloween party or when the car is parked in the driveway. All you have to do is buy a graveyard kit and stick it in with some spooky lighting. It is a great idea for a party

How about decorating your car as a hearse? You can even get a spooky vanity license plate (for when the car is parked) and complete the look. Making your car look like a hearse just requires a long car (like a van) and some curtains on the windows. How about a skeleton as your passenger? You can buy a great full skeleton and have it join you for rides during the Halloween month.

You can also turn your car into a spider’s web, complete with a spider on top. This is an easy spooky look, and you can buy the spider plushy or plastic version and some gauzy fake spiderwebs or make it yourself with some cotton and wrap it around your car, placing the spider on top. Your car has now become a spider’s den!

Keep it simple

If you want to keep it simple, you can always just buy stickies for your car. There are some great blood stickers and spooky pasties. You can also buy spooky lights for the interior of your car, placing battery-powered tea lights or Halloween themed string lights. Make sure they match your theme. You can even match your costumes to your car theme, so you look very Halloween.

Trunk or Treat

Trunk or treat is a recent tradition for decorating your car when it’s going to be parked, similar to a tailgating party. You can decorate your car however you want, from a Hogwarts castle to a dragon. Just remember to pick decorations that will fit the size of your car. To make it even bigger, put down your seats to use all the space available. Some ideas are

  • Fill your entire pick-up truck bed with fall leaves to create an autumn scene.
  • Hang netting from your roof and doors, to create a sea-theme
  • For a hoedown-themed car, place a small hay bale on the ground in front of your trunk display.

Don’t forget to line your trunk to make it look even better. You can use tablecloths, garbage bag and even poster boards. Since your car will be stationary in a trunk or treat, you go big with your decorations. You can create a Starbucks drive-thru, a McDonald’s storefront or a pirate ship. To make it even better, buy themed candy. Is your car cookie-monster themed? Give out chocolate chip cookies. If it’s a pirate ship, place the candy in a treasure chest.
