To you, what is the most important aspect when looking for a new or used car; driving performance, gas mileage, safety, or technology and features?

An exciting aspect of a car that sometimes gets overlooked is the color. The color gives the car a personality, and it can provide a glimpse of who the driver is as well. However, the color of the vehicle is actually significant for a few other reasons.

Of course, you want a color you’ll be happy with when you get a new car. But you also want to be thinking of the resale value of that car and pick a color other people would like in the future.

It is essential to know what colors are popular for different types of cars and which are easy or challenging to maintain. Also, what does the color of the car represent; safety or style?

Earlier in 2021, Kelly Blue Book put together a comprehensive article detailing these crucial car color factors. You will see some trends as the basic colors reign supreme.

The consensus top colors for Trucks, Minivans, and SUVs

The big cars are all about sticking with the basics. White is the top color for trucks, minivans, and SUVs. While gray comes in 2nd for trucks, tied for 2nd for minivans, and 3rd for SUVs. Black ended up 3rd for trucks, tied for 2nd for minivans, and 2nd for SUVs. Silver, red, and blue round out the top six colors for the big cars.

The three other colors that would be enticing for big cars would be green, gold/beige, and brown. For SUVs and pickup trucks, green comes in after those top colors. For minivans, gold/beige is a pretty popular look and slides in after those colors above.

The consensus top colors for Sedans, Wagons, and Hatchbacks

Moving onto midsize cars, you’ll see that those top 6 colors from above still hold true here. The top color for sedans, wagons, and hatchbacks is white. Followed by black, gray, silver, and blue/red tied for 5th. The scarce gold is another option for these everyday passenger vehicles.

The consensus top colors for Convertibles, Coupes, Sports Cars, & Luxury Cars

For the more slick convertibles, coupes & sports cars, black is the top color. Black is followed by white & gray, blue, red, then silver. Green and orange come in behind silver, then gold rounds out the group. As for Luxury cars, the very fancy white metallic takes the top spot, followed by black, gray, blue & silver, and red. Gold, green, brown, and orange are less common, but you may see some luxury vehicles in those colors as well.

The Safest Car Colors

When looking for the safest car colors, the brightest colors are the safest bet! White is the top choice. According to KBB, a white vehicle is 12% less likely to get in an accident than a black one in all types of weather and lighting. The very fun and vibrant colors of yellow, orange, and gold are also very safe. However, not all cars will look good in those three colors. No matter what time of day, these colors will always make your vehicle stand out and help to avoid accidents on the road.

Easiest to clean colors

Not everyone has the time and resources to dedicate to cleaning your car very often. These colors below help hide dirt and scratches and are the easiest to clean whenever you have the time!

Gray: the easiest color to clean, according to the KBB article

Silver: hides dirt and dust longer than most colors

White: mud will show up on white more promptly, but overall an easy color to care for

Green: imperfections show less in green than other colors in this category

Orange: bright and easy to care for

Hardest to clean colors

On the opposite side, not every car hides scratches, pollen, road debris, or is easy to clean well. The colors below are the hardest to clean.

Black: after a fresh wash, it looks great, however, dust and pollen show up on black easliy

Yellow: Mud will always be a problem for yellow cars

Red: the color red can become dull if it tracks mud and dirt

Blue: Scratches, swirls, and watermarks come up pretty easily on blue

What does your car color say about you?

Finally, what does your color say about you? MotorBiscuit put out their take on how car colors and a driver’s personality fit together. These are all for fun, as some personalities will fit with other colors as well. But let’s see if you match up with your current car color or a potential new one!

White: A hard-working, dependable person who “can handle a million details”

Black: Love classic and sleek designs, you are confident and are usually “defined and strong”

Gray: You have “impeccable taste”, as someone who is relaxed and mature

Silver: You are always up to date with style, tech-savvy gadgets, and are energetic

Blue: Every shade of blue is different, but usually, you are relaxed and well put together. Darker blue says you have confidence, while lighter blue you are friendly and upbeat

Red: You like to stand out from the crowd with your energetic personality

Brown/beige: You are a very down-to-earth person who is also “fiscally responsible”
