Voices of Nutley - Persa Papafagos, The Salvage Boutique

Persa Papafagos & her sister Emy Athanasatos have a passion for supporting women-owned designers & crafters. See how they’re bringing their sense of style to NJ in this month’s edition of Voices of Nutley!

Can you briefly tell us who you are, where you are from and what you do?

We are Persa & Emy, sisters and co-owners of The Salvage Boutique (TSB). Our boutique offers new women and children’s clothing and accessories. We grew up in Belleville and attended New Jersey City University (NJCU). I am a teacher and Emy has a psychology degree.

What inspired you to open The Salvage Boutique and why in this field specifically?

Our lifelong passion for fashion prompted our business plan. Additionally, we were inspired once we saw the space, it reminded us of a jewelry box or a whimsical closet. We have different styles but appreciate one another’s individual aesthetic. Therefore our store offers a range of styles, price-points, and both classic and trendy pieces.

What are your goals for The Salvage Boutique?

Our goal for TSB is to become a local go-to store for busy women where they can get one-on-one attention why enjoying refreshments and good music. Most women leave with clothing they might not have picked for themselves but end up loving what they tried on! We have late night hours and open by appointment. We also stock our store with items made by women for women.

The Salvage Boutique + NWNG

How long have you lived in North Jersey?

We have lived in NJ most of our lives, our parents we born in Greece.

How do you like Nutley and how do you like managing an organization here?

TSB is a proud member of the NWNG; an amazing group of local business owners who support and refer one another.

How are you involved with the local community? Do you attend events?

I love Nutley; I have lived here for 10 years and my son attends Radcliffe Elementary. I definitely feel that “community vibe” here, as a working mom I appreciate the mix of both working moms and stay at home moms picking up their kids. During my son’s weekly baseball practices I’ve discovered that most moms on his team are also teachers. We now gather at the picnic table and talk about life during that hour, while our kids practice with their dedicated and nurturing coaches. These weekly talks reassure us that our life struggles are not unique and laughter and a reassuring nod can make everything okay.
