Voices of Nutley: Dan & Bonnie Cleary

Dan & Bonnie Cleary are crazy about dough. Learn more about how their passion for pretzels blossomed into a thriving local business in this week’s edition of Voices of Nutley!

Can you briefly tell us who you are, where you are from and what you do?

We’re Dan and Bonnie Cleary, we are married with two beautiful daughters living in Bloomfield. Both of us are originally from New York and settled in Bloomfield when we started our family together in 2003. I worked for a major investment bank for 32 years and in September 2016 left the firm to manage and operate the Pretzel Factory. Bonnie recently started a new position as director of Research for a Television network in NYC.

What inspired you to start your own business and why in this field specifically?

I have always been interested in doing something other than the routine corporate grind and he was looking for several years at different opportunities. I fell in love with these pretzels 10 years ago, while working outside Philadelphia, and I knew this would be perfect in our area. At the time we couldn’t take the chance with a 3-year-old and a 2-year-old. On a second look at the Philly Pretzel Factory, we decided now was a good time to take a chance.

What are your goals for the Philly Pretzel Factory?

To keep making DOUGH! Haha more like: to hopefully have a good long run in our location, supporting Nutley and the surrounding towns with all their pretzel needs. We’ve been open for just over a year now and so far so good. The town and its community have been great in supporting us and the brand.

How long have you lived in North Jersey?

I’ve been in New Jersey for about 20 years and Bonnie has been here 14 years.

How do you like Nutley and how do you like being a business owner here?

We love Nutley. We started coming to town when our kids were babies, walking the trails, the restaurants offer a great variety, always thought it has that charming small town vibe. So far so good, this was our first pick for a location and we lucked out finding the spot we hope to be in for a long time.

How are you involved with the local community? Do you attend events?

We try to be a part of everything in one way or another. We are part of the Chamber of Commerce, the Nutley Raiders program, we try to support as many charities as we can through pretzel donations or discounts. We support the Middle school and High school with student discount on lunch / after school deals. Yes, we try to attend as many events as possible, this town has a lot going on between street fairs, parades, the Schools, Parks and Rec Dept, Chamber of Commerce, etc. It’s hard for us to hit them all, but we’re trying.
