How Kung-Fu Brings out the Best in Matteo Torres

Denis Ark, a fitness coach and martial arts expert who has been highlighted before, introduces us another great Nutley story. This time, the main character is the 9 year-old little boy, Matteo Torres, who discovers his best part inside by the help of martial arts. Does it sound interesting? When eight year old Matteo Torres first walked into Invincible Ark Fitness over one year ago, I knew I had my work cut out for me. He was very timid and lacked focus, self-confidence, coordination and enthusiasm. As I introduced myself, I could see the despair in his father’s eyes. At that moment I knew, this young boy was here for a reason. This wasn’t just some afterschool activity; his father had purpose and desired my help in bringing out the best in his son.

Two major challenges that would try to hinder our training were that he did not speak English and had a very short attention span. I learned this quickly but I accepted the challenge regardless of the situation. I knew very well what it was like to be a stranger in a strange land from my travels to the Orient, so I used the art of Kung fu to communicate with the child which never fails. Kung Fu is a martial art that is practiced in many different countries all over the world.

Being my youngest student at the time, I was passionate about motivating him to the best of my ability because I saw a lot of myself in him. It was difficult at first. I showed him Kung Fu techniques that were complex and I had to speak phonetically so that he could understand me. In time, we both grew together as we learned from each other and continue to this day to have a great teacher/student bond.

Over one year later, Matteo’s self-confidence has soared. He has improved his English, athleticism and focus in all aspects of life. Not only has he become an honor roll student in school, but he has become a leader in our martial arts classes. His father is very proud of him and has enrolled his whole family including himself, in my Kung Fu classes as well.
