New Jersey Plans to Require Zero Emission by 2035

This month, the governor of New Jersey set goals to ensure the electrification of buildings, to propose rules for flood protection and he also announced new grants for heavy-duty electric vehicles. 

Like many other states in the United States, New Jersey is taking steps to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) by 2035. The state government recognizes the importance of transitioning from gasoline-powered cars to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality. In this article, we will explore the initiatives taken by New Jersey to promote the use of electric vehicles. In addition, the federal government will announce in April if Kia vehicles will qualify for tax credit. The bill only recognizes those EVs manufacturing in the U.S.

The Latest In New Jersey Auto

Within the past few weeks, Governor Phil Murphy outlines broad climate goals for the state of New Jersey. One of the goals included a rule that will enable the adaptation of light-duty trucks and cars to zero-emission vehicles by 2035. 

The governor believes implementing this rule will accelerate his plan of using 100% clean energy by 2035. He plans on reaching these metrics by working with natural gas utilities to make the state less depending on fossil fuels while retaining jobs. 

The Implementation of Electric Vehicles

New Jersey has also established a network of public charging stations throughout the state to facilitate long-distance travel for electric vehicle owners. The state has received a grant from the Federal Highway Administration’s Alternative Fuel Corridor Program to install charging stations along highways and major transportation routes. The funding will support the installation of 50 new charging stations, bringing the total number of charging stations in the state to over 1,000. The state is also partnering with private businesses to install charging stations in public locations such as malls, parking lots, and hotels.

Another way New Jersey promotes the use of electric vehicles is by electrifying its fleet of vehicles. The state has committed to electrifying at least 25% of its light-duty fleet by 2025 and 100% by 2035. This commitment includes replacing aging gasoline-powered vehicles with electric vehicles and installing charging infrastructure at state facilities. The state encourages local governments to follow its lead and transition their fleets to electric cars.

EV Adoption | Education and Outreach Programs 

In addition to these initiatives, New Jersey is also working to promote EV adoption through education and outreach programs. The state has launched a website, Drive Green New Jersey, which provides information and resources to help consumers make informed decisions about purchasing and owning electric vehicles. The website includes a tool that allows consumers to compare the costs of owning an electric car versus a gasoline-powered vehicle and a map of public charging stations in the state. The state is also partnering with utilities to provide outreach and education to their customers about the benefits of electric vehicles.

Implementation… But Not Without Challenges

New Jersey’s efforts to promote electric vehicle adoption are not without challenges. One of the biggest challenges is the limited availability of electric vehicle models. Currently, only a few models of electric vehicles are available in New Jersey, and they tend to be more expensive than gasoline-powered cars. However, as the market for electric vehicles grows and more automakers enter, the cost and availability of electric cars are expected to improve.

Another challenge is the need for more charging infrastructure. Although the state has made progress in expanding its charging station network, there are still areas where charging infrastructure could be improved. This can be a barrier for people who live in apartments or other multi-unit dwellings, as they may need access to a private charging station.

In conclusion, New Jersey is taking significant steps to promote the adoption of electric vehicles by 2035. Through the Charge Up New Jersey program, the installation of public charging stations, the electrification of its fleet of cars, and education and outreach programs, the state is making it easier and more affordable for consumers to transition to electric vehicles. While there are still challenges to overcome, the state’s commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable transportation system is commendable. It provides a blueprint for other states to follow.
