The new year is the perfect time to make all types of resolutions: Lose weight, start a new job, or learn something new. But if you’re someone who’s had their fair share of driving blunders in 2018, now is the time to brush up on your driving skills.

Just like any type of skill, no matter how long you’ve been doing it, there is always room for a bit of refreshing. These helpful tips will help you become a better, and more importantly, a safer driver, helping save you from expenses, tickets, and headaches.

  1. Readjust your mirrors

It’s ok to admit it. There’s a chance (especially if you’ve had the same car for a while) that you haven’t even thought about touching your mirrors. But a few bumps and you might not realize that your mirrors aren’t positioned for optimal visibility. Make sure your blind spots are covered to avoid accidents.

  1. Quit Distracted Driving

Distracted driving accounts for 25% off all driving fatalities. Make it a goal to end distracted driving. This can mean talking on the phone (yes, even with Bluetooth!), texting while driving, fidgeting with the radio, etc. Take measures to decrease your distractions. For example, if you’re going on a road trip, make sure things like your water bottle or snacks are in reach, and if you drop something between the seats, pull over before digging for it.

  1. Practice the Basics

Just because you haven’t parallel parked in a year and never back your car into a spot doesn’t mean you won’t have to ever again. If it’s been a while since you’ve had to use some of those driving skills, practice! Just like you did when you were in driver’s ed, head to an empty parking lot and make sure you’re still able to successfully complete them in a pinch.

  1. Slow Down and Take a Deep Breath

Similarly to distracted driving, road rage can lead to dangerous situations. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by someone else’s driving decisions, but instead of retaliating, make an effort to slow down and stay calm. Taking a few deep breaths in the moment can give you added awareness to realize retaliation isn’t worth it. If the other person continues with their bad driving habits, chances are they’ll learn their lesson eventually.

  1. Tune Up Your Car

Even if you’re the best driver around, failing to take care of your car is a great way to be portrayed as a poor driver. Don’t forget your tune-ups, oil changes, and tire rotations. A car is an investment and should be treated as such. And if you’re looking for a trusted source to maintain your vehicle, our maintenance center is ready to help!
