Voices of Nutley

Zion is a student at The Phoenix Center who loves working part-time in the Parts Department here at Nutley Auto Kia. Learn more about The Phoenix Center’s Transition Program and get to know more about Zion and his aspirations in this month’s edition of Voices of Nutley!

How does the Supported Employment Program work at The Phoenix Center?

The Phoenix Center’s Transition Program provides training to all students ages 14 through 21 using various types of vocational activities. The two components of this program are Career Exploration for students 14 to 16 and the Structured Learning Experience (SLE) Program using supported employment for students 16 and older.

Structured Learning Experiences are experiential, supervised educational activities designed to expose students to the requirements and responsibilities of specific job titles, and to assist them in gaining employment skills and making career and educational decisions. These experiences may be either paid or unpaid, depending on the type of activities involved.

Our highly trained employment staff accompanies students to all job sites. They provide natural supports while integrating the principles of ABA, task analyses, data collection, fading, and prompting, as well as, adaptive strategies and materials to increase job production and to ensure success at the job site.

Since the Spring of 2006.

To Zion: What has The Phoenix Center done for you?

Plenty of things, for example, they have helped me find jobs and work. They have also helped my education.

To Zion: What’s your favorite thing about school?

I really enjoy the CBI trips. I enjoy the ventures out of the school into the community.

To Zion: What’s your favorite subject in school and why?

Social Studies and Art- I enjoy learning about History and I have a passion for Art. I also enjoy Media.

To Zion: Can you please describe what you do at Nutley Auto Kia?

I work in the parts department. Whenever there is a new order or shipment it is my job to see if they got the order right and then put the parts in the correct spots where they would usually find them. I also check the store’s parts inventory.

To Zion: What do you like about working at Nutley Auto Kia?

It has a fun and nice atmosphere. I enjoy my coworkers and really enjoy my supervisor Jon. I also enjoy checking the parts and putting them away.

To Zion: What do you want to do once you graduate?

I want to follow my dream of being a writer/Storyteller. I’d like to create my own comic book series.

Would you recommend Nutley Auto Kia as a place to work? Why?

Yes- well if you’re a fan of cars and if you have an interest in car parts I would say Nutley Auto Kia is the right place for you.
