Voices of Nutley

Henry DelTosto is an accomplished veteran and dedicated member of the Nutley community. Learn more about how he became involved with the Nutley American Legion Post 70 in this week’s edition of Voices of Nutley!

Can you briefly tell us who you are, where you are from and what you do?

My name is Henry P. DelTosto.  I was born in North Arlington, NJ in 1949 to a father who came to the US from Italy and a mother who was from Nova Scotia, Canada. I graduated from North Arlington High School in 1967.  I graduated with a BA in Political Science from St. Andrew’s College in Laurinburg, NC in 1971. In August of 1971, I entered the US Army and received my Basic and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, SC.  After my initial training, I served with the 303rd Civil Affairs Group and joined PSE&G as a Computer Programmer. In 1974 I was selected for Officer’s Training and graduated 3rd in my class. I returned to the 303rd but was later assigned to Headquarters of the 78th Division in the US Army Reserves serving in various capacities in the G3 (Plans, Operations & Training) section. I left the military in 1988 and married my wife Lynne (née Park), a resident of Nutley and moved to our current home in Kearny, NJ. After 35 years in various capacities with PSE&G, I retired in 2006.

What inspired you to get involved with the Nutley American Legion Post 70 and why in this field specifically?

As a veteran, I enjoy socializing with others who have served their country and the opportunity to give back to the community, state, and Nation. Since my wife was from Nutley I met a large number of people from the town who were active in the Legion and whom I felt I could partner with in the pursuit of common objectives.

What are your goals for the Nutley American Legion Post 70?

Our local post will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2019 and I am trying to make that year a very special time. In the past, we had a drum & bugle corps, sponsored various sports teams for the youth of Nutley including one team that won the NJ State Legion Baseball championship. Each year we run a coloring contest for the elementary schools, sponsor a dozen or so high school juniors for NJ Boys’ State, provide 4 scholarships for graduating seniors, take a lead role in planning and executing the Memorial Day Parade, Dignified Flag Disposal Ceremonies and the Veterans’ Day Celebration. We are a member of the Nutley Chamber of Commerce, provide leadership for the Nutley Veterans’ Council and make donations to Nutley’s Police and Fire departments. I want to ensure that this heritage of involvement continues and even grows larger.

How long have you lived in North Jersey?

I have lived in NJ all my life (since 1949) first in North Arlington (Bergen County), then in Kearny (Hudson County).

How do you like Nutley and how do you like managing an organization here?

Although I do not live in Nutley I am impressed by the support, intellect and innovative thinking of the residents and their elected officials. My only regret is that with so many competing activities in the town the Post has a difficult time engaging new members who are willing to take on leadership roles in the organization. That having been said, Nutley is a wonderful place to live, work and manage our Post.

How are you involved with the local community? Do you attend events?

I spend most of my time managing the Post but do find time to participate on the Nutley Veterans’ Council and the Third Half Club (Booster Club) as well as spearheading the rest stop for the Nutley FD Santa tour.  I participate in just about all of the local celebrations and events and have served as emcee for the Memorial Day Parade and the Veterans’ Day Celebration. I also try to attend the many fundraising events run in the town.
