The museum is renowned for its major collection of works by 19th century political cartoonist, Thomas Nast. Nast is known for popularizing the Republican Elephant, Democratic Donkey, and America’s image of Santa Claus. The “Thomas Nast: Unknown Works and American Icons” exhibit, open through October 4th, 2015, displays previously unpublished and rarely seen original works by Nast. Also known for his Civil War work which covered both the home and battle fronts, Nast’s images were the main source of information about the war for many people and examples of this can be viewed in the exhibit “The Civil War through the Eyes of Thomas Nast” through December 23rd. On Sunday September 27th, 1 – 4pm, the Museum will hold the program “Hooray! It’s Thomas Nast’s 175th Birthday!” Museum Curator Ryan Hyman will be available to answer questions about the collection and special children’s activities will be available.

The Museum has partnered with the Canal Society of New Jersey to present “Canals of New Jersey” through October 29, 2015. The exhibit tells the story of New Jersey’s towpath canals and is supplemented by objects from the Museum collection.

MHHM offers a range of public programs throughout the year. This September pre-schoolers and their families can bring a blanket and picnic to enjoy “Lunch with the Librarian”, free admission courtesy of the Morristown and Morris Township Library. On September 13, at 4:30pm Linda Barth will present “The Delaware and the Raritan Canal” and on September 20th, at 4pm, “Cool Women” present a poetry performance in the gardens.
