Over the past decade, KIA transformed itself from being just another mass-market automotive brand to one of the most exciting in terms of design, technology, and value. This year, the Korean automaker stepped up its game yet again with the launch of the all-new K5, the replacement for the hugely successful Optima sedan.

Serving up new and exciting features, options, and safety equipment, as well as new powertrain options and a new eight-speed automatic transmission, the K5 bundles it all up in a stunningly gorgeous exterior and contemporary interior design. With its refresh, the K5 presents itself as a compelling alternative to the likes of the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

Highlights of the Interior

Introducing a whole new driver-oriented interior design, the confines of the K5 caters to its occupants with an open yet functionally attractive and simple cabin. Depending on the trim chosen, the K5 features metal trim or natural-appearing wood accents, a new digital gauge cluster, a sporty flat-bottom three-spoke steering wheel, and a large high-definition color touchscreen multimedia system.

Exterior Highlights

With the help of Peter Schreyer, KIA’s current chief of design since 2006 and formerly of Audi, designers evolved the Optima’s design, taking it in a sportier direction, thanks to a new ‘tiger-nose grille,’ aggressively designed front and rear lower fascias, twin chrome exhaust tips, and new wheel designs available in 16-, 18-, and 19-inch sizes.  New LED headlamps feature unique daytime running lamps and turn signals that extend from the grille outward and wrap around the side of the front bumper. The body itself also features a sleek, low-slung fastback-style sloping roofline, which exudes more of a sports car appearance than a family sedan.

New Engine Offering & Eight-Speed

Under the hood of the K5 is an all-new ‘Smart Stream’ 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline direct-injection (T-GDI) four-cylinder engine producing 177 horsepower and 195 ft-lb of torque at 5,500 RPM. Thanks to the latest and greatest technology, it provides excellently versatile and responsive power delivery across a wide range of engine speeds (1,500-4,500 rpm) while delivering class-leading fuel economy.

Engineers paired the new engine to an eight-speed automatic transmission, similar to what is found on more expensive offerings from the likes of Audi and BMW. With vast improvements, the K5 also boasts increased efficiency without sacrificing a fun and engaging driving experience.

AWD Now Offered in Select Markets

One of the most exciting additions to the K5 is the all-new and optional all-wheel-drive system that utilizes an electro-hydraulic coupling for faster response in torque distribution, which makes the 2021 K5 just one of two vehicles in its class offering AWD. As a result, the K5 makes for a great option for those living in winter climates.

Updated Technology

The K5 also features a class-leading and intuitive infotainment media system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard equipment. An optional 10.25-inch screen is also available along with satellite-based navigation on the upper trims.

The new K5 also rides on a completely new chassis platform, which according to KIA, is lower, wider, stronger, while offering more space than the car it replaces. More importantly, for consumers that value first impressions, the K5 dazzles the eyes by evolving the former Optima’s sleek fastback contour.

The K5 is available in five trims: the LX, LXS, GT-Line, EX, and the top-of-the-line GT (available in the fall of 2021). The standard MSRP price for the K5 is $23,595. Most of the trims will feature a chrome grill, excluding the GT and GT-Line trims which are distinguished with a glossy black grille. The LXS and GT-Line cars will also offer optional AWD. All K5’s will come with selectable driving modes—Sport, Custom, Normal and, Smart driving modes—all of which alter the behavior of the transmission, steering, and engine. The top-of-the-line high-performance GT receives an additional Sport+ mode, allowing the driver to make the most use of K5’s road-going potential. Rounding it all off is the fitment of top specification Pirelli P Zero rubber that ensures the utmost grip and ride quality performance.

Other fashionably new additions to the K5 include acoustic sound-deadening glass that ensures a quieter interior and an optional panoramic sunroof. Standard on the upper-tier trims is a top-specification Bose sound system with 12 audio speakers, along with smartphone wireless charging, and natural voice recognition tech, allowing for control of the infotainment, HVAC, and Bluetooth phone functions.

Safety is also paramount with the K5 offering class-leading passive and active protection systems, including forward collision warning and avoidance assist with automatic braking, and lane-keep and lane-follow assist rear-cross traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and avoidance, navigation-based radar-guided smart cruise control.
