How can we join? How can we help promote?
Please become a Nutley Pace Car participating business. As a participating business, you would invite your employees and customers to pledge by offering Nutley Pace Car magnets onsite and promoting the program through your usual communication channels such as email, web, and social media. Along with magnets and pledge forms, the program can provide additional promotional content that you can adapt as needed.
Nutley Kia has shared a few articles about driving safety. What are some bad driving behaviors you see in Nutley?
Despite Nutley’s walkable design, pedestrians face serious safety issues and barriers to walking, including the amount/speed of traffic and a widespread disregard by drivers of the NJ pedestrian safety law that requires them to stop for pedestrians in marked crosswalks and yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in unmarked crosswalks at intersections. These threats are particularly acute for children and seniors.
The amount and speed of traffic imperiling pedestrians can be observed on numerous Nutley streets, including in residential neighborhoods and school zones, and have been documented in traffic studies conducted by the Township’s Traffic Safety Coordinator (e.g., a Jan 2011 study found unsafe conditions near the school are “largely man-made as a result of the disregard for motor vehicle and pedestrian laws.”)
Disregard for the NJ pedestrian safety law can likewise be observed at any crosswalk in town, even those staffed by crossing guards during school arrival and dismissal times. It is also documented by pedestrian accident statistics: In 2013, six pedestrians were struck by motorists in Nutley, and in 2014, the number jumped to 20 pedestrians, including one fatality.
In a February 5, 2015 Nutley Sun article, Nutley officials acknowledged the magnitude of the problem, and described the steps they are taking to address it such as pedestrian-activated lights at crosswalks and increased enforcement.
Anything else you’d like to share with our readers (who are mostly Nutley and surrounding area residents)?
