Driving in New Jersey can sometimes get a little crazy. And there is no day-ruiner like a car accident or ticket.

We wanted to help you start the new year on a positive note, accident and ticket free. You’re only human, and it’s common for things to slip our minds—even traffic laws. This crash course in New Jersey driving laws and tips will help you hone your skills.

  1. Don’t stop in the E-Z Pass booth. Your transponder will work as you drive through it with slow speeds, while stopping can cause delays and accidents.
  2. If you’re going slow, stay in the slow lane. The left lane is for passing only, not driving. Keeping a slower speed in the left lane will frustrate fellow driver.
  3. Stop for school buses at least 25 feet away on any public or private road or parking lot when a bus uses its flashing red lights or when it has stopped.
  4. You must use headlight a half hour after sunset and a half hour before sunrise. Use them also when visibility is 500 feet or less and when it’s raining heavily enough that you’re using windshield wipers.
  5. Passing on the right is only allowed when you are driving on a road with more than 1 lane going in the same direction, if the vehicles on the roadway are moving in two or more continuous lines or when the motorist ahead is making a left turn. (Sixt)
  6. Before passing a bicyclist or skateboarder, the law states that you first must honk.
  7. It’s illegal to frown at a police officer. We’re not sure this law is strongly abided by, but it might be helpful to know at some point.
  8. Think again before you drink and drive. Aside from the obvious reasons not to drink and drive, if you’re convicted of driving while intoxicated in NJ, you can never apply for a personalized license plate.
  9. You’re required to yield the right of way in any situation where failing to do so could result in an accident. This holds true is even if the other party is in the wrong.
  10. All drivers are required to make every reasonable effort to remove all snow and ice on your car. This includes your roof!
