Signs That It's Time to Change Your Tires

It’s officially fall which means winter is right around the corner. Soon many people will be changing their regular tires to snow tires in preparation for the inevitable winter road conditions. However, this should not be the only time you think about your tires- too often people wait until something bad happens and it’s too late. In case you don’t know what you should be on the lookout for, here are a few signs that it is time for you to change your tires.

When you can see all of Lincoln’s head

Tread depth is important for ensuring traction between your tires and the road- especially during the rainy and snowy seasons. The legal minimum depth is 2/32” (or 1.66 mm), but for safety purposes, such coming to a quick stop, consider replacing them when there is 4/32” of tread left. In order to test this out take a penny with Lincoln on one side and place him, head down, into the tread. If you can see all of his head it is time for you to get new tires.

Bulges, blisters, bars, and cracks

Take the time to give your tires a once-over. If you happen to notice anything abnormal such as a bulge or blister, it is best to bring your car to a shop immediately. Often times these inconsistencies can lead to tires blowing out, something you should avoid at all costs. Cracks in the tires probably won’t lead to a blowout, but it might mean that your tire is starting to leak. Perpendicular to the tread there are bars, something else you should be paying attention to. Normally, you should be able to see a couple, but if you start seeing more than two it is a sign that the tread is getting low and you need to change your tires.

Tires

If it has been a while

Most of these concerns should not be an issue unless you have been driving on your tires for a few years. Once you hit the five-year mark with your tires it is highly advised to get them inspected at least once a year by a professional. It is important that you look at the date they were manufactured. The maximum age for a tire you can use is ten years- this goes for spare tires as well. Also, for them to last that long be sure to perform regular tire rotations, maintain correct air pressure and stay up on vehicle maintenance.

Tires

When you can see your breath

If the weather is at a consistent 40 degrees, it is time to make the switch to winter/snow tires. Even if your tires are labeled M+S (for mud and snow) it is best to get tires that are specifically made for the winter because, due to the drop in temperature, the tires won’t be able to grip the road as well. Also, even though it might not seem necessary, you should replace all of your tires with snow tires if you are going to make the switch- even if you only have two-wheel drive. If you neglect to do so it can cause spinouts in addition to reducing steering capabilities.

Tires

Overall, there are many signs as to when it is time for a tire change. Instead of waiting for something to happen, try to take the time to inspect them every once in a while.
