classic car shows

We are a New Jersey auto dealership so of course we want to share as much car information in New Jersey as possible. At the beginning of this month, we’ve highlighted 5 car shows for our readers. Today, we would like to go further. We’ve invited Fred, the founder of NewJerseyCarShows.com, to chat about his experience on different car shows. He has been to over 100 car shows during the past 40 years and he will keep doing this. In the interview, you will learn about where his passion comes from and the must-knows of visiting a car show. Check this out right away.

Tell us a little about yourself

I grew up in North Jersey and have been going to car shows since I was about 8 years old.

Why did you start the site, NewJerseyCarShows.com? What do you want this site to achieve?

I started the site in 2010 with my friend Joe because there was no central place online to find out the many car shows and cruise nights for the season. There was no way for the local groups who run these shows for great causes to get publicity to their target audience. It continues to grow every year and we get 1500-3000 visitors a day in season. We do not charge anyone to list any event and we often promote non-car events and help those in need. We have some great corporate sponsors that help defray our operating costs and Joe and I do all the website content updating ourselves.

How did you get interested in automobiles?

My father got me started in the hobby at a young age. He restored 30 antique cars – many of them show winners. He also was one of the founders back in 1968 of the Restored Rusty Relics Antique Auto Club in Paramus NJ.

Why do you love car shows? What do you get from the events?

The people are a big reason why. Many friendships develop when you share a common interest in cars. People in this hobby are very friendly and love to help one another.

What’s your favorite car show you’ve been to? What’s the best one in NJ?

My favorite car show takes places every October in Hershey PA. It is the world’s largest car show and flea market with thousands of swap meet vendors, cars for sale and incredible cars in the Saturday car show. I have been going every year since 1972 with my dad and never missed one. When he passed away last year, I wasn’t sure I could continue – butI know that he would want me to go so I did – and plan to go again in a few more months. There are many great shows in NJ – but the favorite for me is the USR Antique Car Show & Swap Meet Show sponsored by the Restored Rusty Relics Antique Auto Club and the Upper Saddle River Fire Department held every May.

What should we do at car shows?

Look, take pictures, ask the car owners questions – but please don’t touch. Car owners put a lot of work into their cars and don’t appreciate people touching their cars. If you ask to see the interior or engine, many car owners will gladly oblige.

What advice would you give to someone looking to go to the first car show?

Visit our site at www.newjerseycarshows.com and find some local ones. Talk to the spectators and car owners. It is amazing how much you can learn about this great hobby and have fun with the family by going to a local car show.
