Early summer is the best time for families and friends to take a short one-day getaway on weekends. Around Nutley and Newark, many easy-accessible scenic parks for hiking and picnicking are located in 60 minutes drive away.   1. Mills Reservation County Park
    This 156-acre small reservation is located on the First Watching Mountain and preserved in its natural state. Only 15 minutes away from Nutley and 30-40 minutes from Newark and NYC, the park is great for urban couch potatoes to enjoy a one-day getaway in the nature. The park offers a wide range of hiking trails, some of which leads to a cliff where hikers are able to see the breathtaking skyline of New York City. It’s also a great place for children to learn more about the diversity of wildlife and plant species.

 

  1. South Mountain Reservation
    This nature reserve, located in central Essex County, North New Jersey, was first developed in the end of 19th After hundreds years, it is still preserved in its original wild state, woodlands and ponds. The hike’s features include the Orange Reservoir, which was an important part of water supply system during the urbanization of north New Jersey, as well as many dramatic waterfalls. Only 20 minutes from Newark, this place is great for pond-fishing, trail hiking and picnicking.     High Mountain Park, the largest wooded area east of the NJ Highlands, is locates in Wayne, New Jersey. The Preserve owns 5 major trails ranging from 0.2 to 4.9 miles. The longest yellow trail features the magnificent views of New York City and stunning sunsets from High Mountain. Formed by lava flows, High Mountain’s rock basalts are also a special highlight to see and learn some geology.
