From Hobby to Business: Interview Newark Handicraft Maker

We found this talented handicraft maker via Etsy and was really impressed by her work and her passion. Check out her story below.

My name is Deborah and I am a 28 year old Newark, NJ resident. I create jewelry and crochet hats, scarves, fingerless gloves, and ear warmers; as well as a plethora of other items which include soy candles, lip balm, and homemade baked goods. Working with beads and wires or claymation, I’m doing it. What can I say I’m all over the spectrum and I love every bit of it! Being a Gemini in every sense of my zodiac is to be free flowing and creative and I believe I am just that! You have to be when you love to write short stories and poetry from a child of preschool age. One day I hope to be published, I love writing it soothes me as well as making people look and feel good and feeding them gives me such a warm feeling inside and a great sense of self worth that is beyond compare to anything else that I’ve ever accomplished in life.

My official business, which I run out of my home is BodyGarbage! I blindly started it as a hobby until my mom and friends supported and encouraged me to sell my items. I had no idea things would turn out to be such a hit. Back to my business name, I know you’re dying to know…BodyGarbage? Why? Well because it’s different, it’s sexy, it’s fun, it’s catchy; a memorable, unique play on words that you won’t ever be able to remove from being engrained in your mind. All the fashionables I create are made to be worn (body) but do we have an abundance of it and one day will it be recycled, gifted, or even given away ( garbage ) maybe? But we as people have a need an undoubted desire to purchase quality items that are fun and unique, may it be for our own personal use or because we think it may be a great gift no matter the occasion. All in all I’m very proud and love the work I do and my business’ name, whether it’s working on the beach, at the Secaucus Green Festival, school events or made to order items, custom order by request or a design that’s already prepared and ready for purchase my business motto is to be unique, creative, inspiring, innovative , and to just be you! We are all creative in our own way and that is most displayed through our very own unique style. Believing I cater to all age groups, all from what you seek in a completer piece for an outfit, I provide through BodyGarbage.

Only in the great state of NJ can I bring my hobby to a business and make my own as well as others dreams come to fruition. In NJ I feel more creative, more at peace, serenity snd solidarity. NJ is home and family. I am from a variety state. Where the people and the cities, townships, municipalities and counties are all different and unique, but are as one! Soon I wish to have all my dreams come true and be able to be a contributing factor in helping to create more jobs at home and opportunity for my fellow New Jerseyan. Being an entrepreneur, woman in business, and creating a booming female business empire is my dream and I intend to make it all come true!
