1. Route 542

Along the route is Batsto Village, a nationally recognized historic site that has evidence showing land use dating back several thousand years. Stop at Wading River to get a tour of the area in a kayak or canoe.

2. State Route 49

Drive out on Route 49 for a beautiful view of The Delaware Memorial Bridge and the Delaware River. With stunning lights in the night, the suspension bridge helps travelers cross over from Delaware to New Jersey, or vice versa. If you’re looking for a quieter space, take a quick detour to visit the Supawna Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, featuring wetlands, grassland, a tidal marsh, waterfowl, and wading birds.

3. Pulaski Skyway

3.502 miles long, the Pulaski Skyway is a four-lane bridge-causeway that travels from Newark to Jersey City. The subject of Steve Hart’s The Last Three Miles, the bridge was also featured in The Sopranos. With a view of warehouses, power lines, smokestacks, train tracks, a jail, and more, the bridge is a forced to be reckoned with in the day, and a window to city skylights at night.

4. Palisades Interstate Parkway

Opened to traffic in 1958, the Palisades Interstate Parkway provides beautiful, scenic views. Take some stops at Rockefeller Lookout, Alpine Lookout, and State Line Lookout for some spectacular views. For a bit of family fun, bike on Henry Hudson Drive, picnic in Alpine Grove, or hike along Palisades Interstate Park.

5. Old Mine Road

Believed to be one of the oldest continuously used roads in the United States, Old Mine Road has maintained its historic and rural charm. Surrounded by beautiful wildlife and streams, the road is a stunning oasis, especially along the Delaware River. Relax and connect with nature, or visit historic sites, such as ruins of old copper mines and Civil War cemeteries.

6. Route 15

Designated State Highway Route 6A, the road was renumbered as NJ 15 in 1927. With views of sustainable farms and wineries, the drive along Route 15 is perfect for some relaxation. If you’re interested in making a stop, walk along one of the marinas at Lake Hopatcong, or grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants.

7. Route 527

Extending 84.86 miles, Route 527 is the second longest 500-series county route in New Jersey. With beautiful rivers, creeks, and woodlands, it’s a great area to unwind in nature or experience New Jersey’s vast variety of farmland, small towns, large cities, industrial complexes, and wealthy suburbs.

8. Route 29

Running from Hamilton Township to Frenchtown, Route 29 is beautiful. Driving by Washington Crossing State Park, you’ll see a beautiful forested area, and several places to stop and cross footbridges to D&R Canal Towpath. If you’re feeling adventurous, explore the Bulls Island Recreating Area that offers fishing, boat launching, and a nature trail. Lambertville and Frenchtown are also two wonderfully charming small towns to visit and grab a bite to eat.
