4 Fuel Economy Tips for new jersey summer driving

Summer involves lots of traveling in New Jersey. Although it’s a small state, there’s a lot of beauty and adventure waiting to be explored. When you consider hitting the scenic roads and enjoying a long journey, fuel economy should be one of your top priorities. The good news is that hot weather can actually increase a vehicle’s fuel economy since the higher temperatures help warm up the engine faster. However, using A/C to cool the interior can significantly reduce fuel efficiency. Here we’ve compiled some useful tips for conserving gas this summer.

Do not idle with the AC running

While stopped, direct sun exposure can cause the cabin to overheat, causing the A/C to work harder at cooling the space, which in turn eats up more fuel. According to U.S. Department of Energy, most AC systems run more efficiently and cool the car faster while driving. That being said, although it might be uncomfortable for a short time, you should still wait to turn on the A/C until you are in motion. To prevent cars from overheating and reduce the usage of A/C, check out our 6 Tips to Prepping Your Kia For New Jersey Summer.

Use summer performance tires

One of the often-ignored factors of fuel economy is the tires being used. All-season tires are the standard on most vehicles but they are not considered to be the most efficient tire design at enhancing fuel economy. Summer performance tires are made of special rubber and stiffer materials designed for faster acceleration and better fuel economy.

Keep calm and drive

According to U.S. Department of Energy, constant speeding and hard braking can reduce a car’s fuel efficiency by 33% on highways. In addition to wasting gas, driving aggressively also increases the risk of car accidents.

Go light on the trip

Any additional cargo you carry gives your car more weight and lowers your gas mileage. Before going on a trip, make sure you cleanup the car by removing unnecessary items or accessories and pack smart for overnights.
